Can I Afford Porcelain Veneers?

Practically every celebrity you see on your TV or the big screen has had a smile makeover of some sort. The most popular dental procedure amongst them is veneers. Regular teeth whitening treatments at your dentist's office is definitely not the same. Not only will veneers give you that paper-white smile, but they can also camouflage flaws and correct chipped or cracked teeth. Let's be honest, porcelain veneers aren't cheap. Some dentists charge $1,000-$4,000 per tooth which can run you in upwards of $30,000 for a full mouth. So we wonder, will my insurance cover some of it? Are there payment plans available? Are there any alternatives? I don't know anyone that wouldn't want a perfect smile, but are veneers out of reach for us mere mortals?

It can be completely frustrating when you've been trying for years to get the whitest smile possible. I've used the Crest Whitestrips religiously, SmileBrite, Zoom teeth whitening in my dentist's office, and have used a Groupon for peroxide treatments twice. For the past year, I've even given up soda and only drink coffee through a small straw. No matter what I do, I can't seem to get the shade of white I want. If you're in a similar boat, veneers are probably you're next option.

Veneers are made of a thin porcelain material that are securely placed over your existing teeth. They can correct teeth that are:

* Discolored or darkened

* Gaps or unevenly spaced

* Chipped or cracked

* Misshapen

* Stained

* Dull

Can I Afford Veneers?

Porcelain veneers are considered a cosmetic procedure, so most insurance companies will not cover it (at least not 100%). You also need to take into account that while veneers last many years, they're not permanent. The typical lifespan is 20 years, so you will need to pay for them again when they wear off. Every insurance policy is different, so your first step should be to contact them and find out what they will cover and what they won't. There are dental plans that are not insurance available for you to purchase. You pay a one-time annual fee and can save from 15-60% off.

The price is usually charged per tooth. Most patients don't pay for veneers for teeth you can't see when they smile. The cost also depends on the size of your teeth and where you are having them placed. The average range is a whopping $1,000 to $4,000 per tooth. How can that ever seem reachable to normal middle-class people? My Carecredit limit would only be able to pay for 4 teeth! After you've gone over your insurance, contact your dentist and see if they offer a re-payment plan. Not many people realize that many will and at a low-interest rate at that.

If you do decide to go through with it, don't expect it to be done in a day. Porcelain veneers take a few appointments to get the final results. Veneers can last up to 20 years and can't be removed once they've been applied. Over time they will experience normal wear and tear and you'll need to repeat the process all over again.
