Are You Allowed To Cheat On Keto?

The keto diet was arguably the most popular diet of 2020. Heck, even I tried it and am still following the diet now. I think one of the most asked questions on any diet is "can I have a cheat day?" The same questions goes for the keto diet. Having a cheat on the keto diet is a double-edged sword. Let's get into why a cheat works for many low-fat diets and why it may or may not work for keto. 

Dieting And Cheat Days Or Cheat Meals

The theory behind having cheat days or cheat meals on diets is that you're likely to stick with it. I think the terms speak for themselves. A cheat day is when you can eat whatever you want all day long. A cheat meal is a single high-fat or high-calorie meal either breakfast, lunch, or dinner. Having a planned cheat day or cheat meal can help you feel like you're not depriving yourself of your favorite foods. It also can help you work harder during the week knowing that you have your day to indulge coming up. 

I personally don't ever have cheat DAYS on the keto diet. I know that will completely knock me out of ketosis and it will take me 3-4 days to get back. That's not worth it for me. So I have one cheat meal maybe 2-3 times a month. For me, doing this has no affect on my weight loss progress and I don't feel deprived. 

Side Effects Of Cheating On Keto

If you can, try not to cheat on keto especially, if you're trying to lose a significant of weight. When you cheat on a diet, it's typically carbs that you are inviting back into your life. That means, you're bringing back those cravings that you word so hard to curtail. If you aren't very disciplined, cheating will inevitably lead to weight gain. Carb consumption will put your body back in fat-storing mode. Water weight will come back full-force, and you'll feel hungrier more often. Cheating on your keto diet can also make you feel bad about yourself and feel like crap. When your blood sugar spikes and you gain back weight, your confidence and mood will suffer. 

Everyone is different, and your doctor is the best person to ask what is right for you. With any diet, most people recommend getting close to or reaching your weight goal first. You're less likely to gain weight if you slowly reintroduce your favorite foods little by little after you've reached success.
