We all know the importance of hydration and the need to drink water on a daily basis. The first thing I drink when I wake up before my morning coffee is a tall glass of lemon water. I'll admit, I do love my diet soda around lunchtime, but I make sure to drink a glass of water first. Water dissolves vitamins and minerals making them easily accessible to the body after you eat. It's also a crucial part of healthy liver and kidney function. Adding lemon and lime to your glass of water only intensifies the health benefits. Here are the top reasons why I always keep both lemons and limes on hand in my kitchen.

1. Citrus Has Anti-Aging Properties

Citrus fruits are jam-packed with ascorbic acid (or vitamin C) that our bodies can't create. This promotes the production of collagen that's responsible for keeping our skin soft and supple. As I mentioned in my article about collagen and aging HERE, we lose 1.5% of our collagen every year after the age of 20. This causes wrinkles, disease, lackluster skin, and other ailments. Drinking water with slices of lemon or lime every day can help slow down the aging process. Lemons and limes are full of antioxidants found in most reputable skin care products and help improve the appearance of the skin.

2. Lemons and Limes Prevent Illness

Lemons and limes contain essential oils, flavonoids, coumarins, and phenolic acids, or in other words, powerful antioxidants. These antioxidants come together to prevent free radicals that harm and damage our cells. Once our cells become damaged, this can lead to health issues and diseases. When you combine the vitamin C found in lemons and limes with these antioxidants, you're providing support to your immune system helping to prevent the cold and flu.

3. Citrus Fruits Can Prevent Cancer

While there is no concrete evidence that citrus fruits can cure cancer, there are studies that show it may prevent it from happening. In animal studies, the citrus pectin found in the peels of citrus fruits can make it difficult for cancer cells to spread, especially, in skin, breast, prostate, and colon cancer. I don't know about you, but this is very hopeful if true and another reason why I'll continue to down lemon water every day.

4. Brain Boosting

The chemicals found in citrus fruits act as a barrier preventing toxic substances from reaching the brain. They also fight against cell inflammation and breakdown to help prevent Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease. Raw lemon juice contains potassium that boosts the brain and nerve cells improving concentration, memory, and processing speed.

5. Lemons and Limes Can Improve Blood Pressure

High blood pressure is a common health problem among most adults. Unhealthy blood pressure levels are linked to atherosclerosis which can cause heart attacks, strokes, and heart disease. Citrus is an excellent way to prevent hypertension as it makes the blood vessels more flexible by softening them. Lemons are potent in vitamin B which prevents heart failure.

These are just a few of the reasons why you should drink lemon and lime water every day. Don't forget to use these citrus fruits in your foods as well. Not only does it give you an extra dose of vitamin C, the acid in the fruit brings out the flavor in your food. Squeeze a little on fish, tacos, chicken, or make a vinaigrette.

Spa water is so much more than regular distilled drinking water. Adding fruits and herbs to your water gives you more vitamins and minerals with every sip. Cucumber has anti-inflammatory effects and provides hydration, mint soothes the stomach, watermelon is rich in antioxidants, and we already know what lemon and limes can do.

How to Make Spa Water

Making spa water is so refreshing and simple to make. Fill a large pitcher with fresh, filtered water. Slice up one lemon, one lime, and a half of a cucumber. Add 4-5 mint leaves depending on taste. Let it sit in the fridge for a few hours to 'marinate.' Try to drink it all within the next two days. After that, it gets a little pulpy and isn't as fresh. You can also add whatever fruit you like such as strawberries, blueberries, watermelons, etc. It's a great way to get your kids to drink more water.
